Why does it say I am short when I have more than enough hours?

Because a category requirement is not met. Most renewals ask for a total and also for some of those hours to be in named categories — ethics, pain management, infection control. Thirty-four hours against a thirty-hour requirement looks complete, and if one of two required ethics hours is missing, it is not. That case is called out explicitly because the total is exactly what hides it.

Can one course count towards two licences?

Yes, and that is normal — tick every credential it applies to. What the planner checks for is the same course entered twice against a single credential, which is a different thing and is flagged as a likely duplicate.

What is the lead time for?

The gap between finishing the work and the board recording it. A course completed the day before expiry is too late if processing takes three weeks. The planner works backwards to the date the work must be finished by, which is the date worth putting in a calendar — and it is in the download.

Why does it warn me about several renewals in one month?

Because three certifications expiring in the same March is a bad month, and it is almost always an accident of when you first took them. Most can be renewed early, and doing that once moves the renewal out of the crowded month permanently.

Does it know my board's requirements?

No, and no tool should claim to. Boards change requirements, sometimes part-way through a cycle. It checks the hours you entered against the requirements you entered, and nothing more. Confirm the real ones with your board.

Do hours from my last cycle count?

Not usually, and the planner excludes anything dated before the current cycle began — worked out from the expiry date and the renewal period. If your board allows carry-over, adjust the dates or the requirement accordingly.

The shortfall that hides behind a healthy total

A renewal asking for 30 hours will usually also ask for some of them in named categories — ethics, pain management, infection control, whatever that board has added recently. Those requirements are the ones people miss, and they are missed for a specific reason: the total looks fine.

Someone with 34 hours against a 30-hour requirement has been watching a number that says they are comfortably done. If one of the two required ethics hours is missing, they are not done, and nothing about the total will tell them. It is the same shape as a project that is 95% complete on every measure anyone is tracking.

So category requirements are checked first here and reported separately, and when the total is met while a category is not, that is called out explicitly rather than left for you to notice.

The date you actually need is earlier than the expiry

A course finished the day before an expiry is too late if the board takes three weeks to process it. The certificate arriving afterwards does not help, and there is a window in which a credential is technically still valid while it is already too late to renew it in time.

That is what the lead time is for. Set it to however long your board realistically takes, and the planner works backwards to the date the work has to be finished by — which is the date worth putting in a calendar. The download includes both.

BLS, ACLS and PALS all expiring in the same March is a bad month, and it is usually an accident of when you first happened to take them.

It is also fixable. Most certifications can be renewed early, and doing it once moves that renewal out of the crowded month permanently. The planner flags any month carrying more than one, because it is easy to see coming a year ahead and very hard to deal with the week it happens.
