Effective aperture and magnification in macro

At macro distances your f/8 is not f/8. That single fact explains most disappointing macro photographs.

Macro photography behaves differently because the lens is far from the sensor relative to its focal length, and several familiar relationships shift.

Effective aperture

As magnification rises, the effective aperture becomes larger in number than the marked one. At 1:1 magnification, a marked f/8 behaves as roughly f/16.

Two consequences follow. You lose light — around two stops at 1:1 — which is why macro work needs so much of it. And diffraction arrives far earlier than expected: setting f/16 at 1:1 gives an effective f/32, which is visibly soft on any modern sensor. This is the main reason macro shots come back disappointing after the photographer stopped down for more depth.

Depth of field at magnification

Depth collapses. At 1:1 it is a matter of millimetres, and no aperture recovers it. Beyond that, focus stacking is the only real answer.

Extension tubes

A hollow tube between body and lens, moving the lens further from the sensor and increasing magnification. Cheap, with no glass to degrade the image.

The costs: you lose infinity focus, you lose light, and working distance shrinks — which matters because the lens ends up so close to the subject that lighting it becomes awkward and insects leave.

Extension adds most magnification to short lenses. On a long telephoto the same tube barely changes anything.

Working distance

Frequently more important than magnification. A 100 mm macro at 1:1 gives roughly twice the working distance of a 50 mm at the same magnification, and that space is the difference between photographing a live insect and watching it leave.

Diffraction. Effective aperture grows with magnification, so a marked f/16 at 1:1 behaves like f/32 — well past the point where any modern sensor stays sharp.

Do extension tubes reduce image quality?

They contain no glass, so they add no aberrations. They cost light, working distance and infinity focus instead.

What magnification counts as macro?

Traditionally 1:1, where the subject is projected life-size onto the sensor. Many lenses labelled macro reach only 1:2.
