How much bandwidth do you actually need
Far less than the sum of everything's peak. What matters is how much is being asked for at the same moment.
Adding up every device's maximum gives a figure nobody ever reaches. Four people who could each use 25 Mbit/s for 4K do not need 100 unless all four watch simultaneously, and mostly they do not.
What things actually use
- 4K streaming — around 25 Mbit/s, and it adapts down when the connection is busy.
- HD streaming — about 6.
- Video calls — a few Mbit/s each way.
- Web and email — bursty and small.
- Gaming — very little bandwidth. It cares about latency, not throughput.
- Backups, sync and updates — everything available, for as long as they run.
That last line is the one that matters. Streaming is polite: it adapts. A backup is not, and will happily take the whole connection.
Upload is what runs out
Most consumer connections are asymmetric — 500 down and 50 up is a common shape. Everything that feels like "the internet is broken" tends to be an upload problem: a backup, a large file going to a shared drive, several people on video calls.
Saturated upload makes downloads slow too. Acknowledgements have to get out, and when the upload queue is full they cannot. That is why the whole connection feels dead while the download figure sits idle.
Latency, not bandwidth
Most complaints about a slow network are about latency and jitter. A video call needs 4 Mbit/s delivered consistently; it breaks up when a backup fills the queue, not because the bandwidth ran out.
Adding capacity does not fix that. Prioritising traffic does — and so does scheduling the backup for the middle of the night.
The narrowest hop decides everything
A path runs at the speed of its slowest link, and nothing else about it matters.
- A gigabit switch does nothing for a laptop on a 200 Mbit/s Wi-Fi link.
- A 10-gigabit server does nothing behind a gigabit uplink.
- A faster internet connection does nothing if the firewall can only forward 300 Mbit/s.
Upgrading anything except the narrowest point changes nothing at all. Working out which hop that is takes ten minutes and regularly saves the cost of the upgrade.

No, very little. It needs consistent low latency, which is a different problem and is not solved by buying more capacity.
