Where these grids actually come from
Worth knowing how much authority each of these carries, because it varies a great deal. The rule of thirds is a teaching device from the late eighteenth century — it appears in a 1797 book on landscape painting — and it survives because it is easy to remember and reliably better than centring everything, not because anything in perception privileges exact thirds.
The golden ratio grid and the spiral have a grander reputation and a thinner basis. The claim that classical painters and architects composed on phi is mostly a nineteenth-century retrofit: the proportion is found in finished work by people looking for it, in images loose enough that a spiral can be positioned to fit almost anything. There is no contemporaneous evidence for most of the famous examples. It remains a pleasant set of divisions and it is not a law of nature.
Use them to diagnose, not to compose
The practical value of an overlay is not that it tells you where to put the subject. It is that it makes an existing imbalance visible — a horizon a little off level, a subject almost but not quite centred, weight collecting in one corner. Those are things the eye notices as discomfort without being able to name, and a grid names them.
That is also why the choice of grid matters less than people argue. Any regular division will surface the same problems, because what you are really doing is comparing the image against a reference that has no opinion. Deliberately breaking a grid, once you can see it, is a legitimate and frequently better choice than obeying it.
Where the lines come from
Thirds divides at 1/3 and 2/3 on both axes. It is the one everybody knows and it works because it reliably produces an off-centre composition.
Golden sections divides at 1−1/φ and 1/φ, which is about 0.382 and 0.618 — slightly closer to the centre than thirds.
The phi grid uses 1/φ² and its complement, about 0.236 and 0.764, giving a tighter central band. It is the one usually meant by "the golden ratio grid" in photography.
None of these is a rule. Centred compositions are a deliberate choice with a long history, and a guide that makes you notice where the subject sits has done its job whether or not you follow it.
Guides are for noticing, not obeying
The value of an overlay is that it makes placement a decision rather than an accident. Whether the subject lands on an intersection matters much less than whether you chose where it landed.
